Become an expert on painting portraits in daysSo it isnt that hard to become and expert in painting portaits in oil. Or at least to look like an expert. Even if you're a begginer, this is what you do.
1) You need supplies if you dont have them.
PAINT)Dont go out buying a kit with a ton of colors and crap you dont need in it. For portraits, you just need yellow ochre, burnt siena, burnt umber, any light blue, and a light red. And I've found that the cheaper paints are actually better. They're not as thick as the expensive ones, which comes in handy.
CANVAS) You can get canvas if you want, but if you're a begginer and cant really afford it, any surface will work. I've used cardboard, notebook paper, you name it, it all works. Just cover it in white acrylic first if it isnt white.
BRUSHES) All you need are two brushes. A small detail one and a medium sized one. Dont listen to all the hype about numner 2's and 6's. Just get a small and medium. You be the judge.
PALLET) Anything works for a pallet. Anything sturdy that is, even newspaper or a paper plate. You juts have to throw it away when you're done, which is easier anyway.
OIL) You may need oil, depending on your paints. Anything liquidy works. Turpintine, linseed paint thinner. Its all good.
NOW ONTO THE PAINTING
Simply find a picture you want to paint and trace it. Thats right, trace it. It can be a magazine cover or anyhing you want. Yo can even blowup a standard 4X6 photo and trace that.
Then apply your tracing to your surface and begin painting. Just make sure you put the colors on their corresponding parts. Skin has really two tints to it. Yellowish, add more yellow ochre. And red, add more red. And if the person is really tan, then add brown. Thats pretty much it.
The main thing on making it look identifiable as the person you paint, is the features. Make sure the eyes and mouth look the same as in the picture. And make sure shadow is the same too. This is what sets up the actual shape of the face with the checkbones and chin and all that good stuff. You cant really mess up on the color to much. Skin is skin, juts make sure that the shadowing of the face is there.
So thats it. Happy painting and good luck.
