: I have almost finished a painting,but I'm not sure how to solve a problem..I
used linseed oil with the paint..however some of the colors have a glossier
look than others, causing a very uneven sheen. It is very obvious incertain
light..I have sprayed a coat of retouch varnish hoping it would even it out,
and it did to a degree, but there are still some spots that stick out....What
can I do to even the shine out..is it ok to go over the entire painting with
a coat of linseed oil?...This is for someone else, they are anxious to have
it..so I can't really wait 6mos for it to dry completely to varnish the traditional
way...or should I just keep putting retouch varnish on til it evens out...I
don't want to ruin it.
: Thanks

This problem of uneven gloss is a vexing one, and it is virtually impossible
to obtain a perfectly even finish with oil painting done as it is with pigments
of varying oil contents. Howver, I have found that there are a few tricks to,
at least, minimize the differences in shine. The first is to use no medium in
the beginning stages of painting i.e. to paint leanly with paint straight from
the tube in the underpainting thinning occasionally with solvent. It is useful
also to lightly abraid the surface of the earlier layers with a 3M finishing
pad to rub away the gloss; be sure to wash the surface with a towel and water
after abraiding. When you are sure that you are ready to put the finishing skin
on the painting you can oil out the entire surface with the oil or medium you
are using (I would avoid a fast drying spray retouch varnish, but use a light
coating of standoil in solvent) and paint the final layer in one skin while
this bed of medium is wet. The final picture varnish or wax will to some extent
mitigate the unveneness of finish.
