glueing canvas and priming help

Some books say that white shellac (or some other sealer) needs to be put on cavas before it is gessoed.
And others just apply gesso to the cavas. Does canvas need to be sealed before or after it is gessoed?
What kind of glue should one use to glue canvas to a board?
