: Alright with the other person's gesso plan...keep the gesso at 3-5 coats, sand between later ones, be sure to gesso the other side as well as the plywood will warp as it adjusts to humidity over time, this, in turn, will lead to delamination of the paint layer. Smaller plywood panels will not exhibit such a tendency but larger ones such as yours are susceptible.
I prefer to prime plywood with a shellac based pigmented primer such a s Zinser Bin primer. This will protect better from the adverse effects of moisture such as cracking and delamination. Prime both sides with several coats of this. Sand thorougly the side to be painted on and apply an oil based primer of your choice such as a traditional white lead in oil or a commercial alkyd primer.
