I prime with pure white acyrlic gesso, draw and ink in the design with India ink, and then cover this with a thin glaze of a maroon imprimatura so the the drawing shows through, I would advise not using acrylic colors for the priming as they tend not to allow good adhesion with the oil painting on top (acrylic gesso is alright since it has silicates to provide "tooth").
