: I havn't painted in over 4 years. After graduating from art school my desire to paint has diminished dramatically.I no im good at what i do, but i just can't get myself to paint continuously. I'm pretty sure some of you have experienced this also, can anyone tell me how they got over it.
WOW! A couple of the replies are kind of cold, aren't they? I think I know how you feel. I went to art school for a year, and after I was out I suddenly felt as if the canvas was a foreign object! In fact, I still feel this way on a regular basis, but I keep working and so can you. And that's the good part! It might just be that you were depressed/disillusioned with what or how you were taught. It's amazing how a little thing can put a person off. For me, it's like if a person says he--and I do mean he--likes my art, I just *know* he's after something else. And while I'm sure there are people reading this who are going to say that's delusional or paranoid, realize that people feel what they feel. The point is that it might be a small thing that is bothering you. If that's so, write a list of actions/feelings/reactions to help you determine what behaviors are undermining your determination to paint. If you're picking up the brush, then thinking "this is boring" don't bother--you really are disintersted. But if you find yourself becoming frustated or fatigued you might be depressed or have hypothyroidism. And don't wrinkle your nose! The doctors really can help with problems like this!! Otherwise, do be sure to eat right and walk in the sun for at least 10 minutes a day, even when it's 104! Breathe deep and stretch occasionally, and most important: DO pick up the brush. At worst all you'll have at the end of the session is scribbles, but more likely you'll have gained a place in your mind where it's okay just to doodle.
