: I've been working almost exclusively in watercolor for the past twenty-odd years, but am interested in working in oil. However I'm at a total loss as to how to get started. My few attempts at oil -- a number of years ago -- involved my thinning the pigment to an extremely fluid consistency until it resembled someting of a watercolor wash (since that's how I'd always instintively worked), but I'm really anxious to use the medium in a more traditional manner. If anyone has any insights to offer, I'd be very grateful. I feel rather at a loss, as I must now "unlearn" all the techniques and shorthand I'd spent the last two decades learning.
Try taking a look at the articles in my oil painting column. Start with the ones from the very beginning, versus the more recent ones. They will serve as a guide toward getting into oil painting for you!
