Sometimes a block is nothing more than reaching a new synthesis of all that has been before, a synthesis grinding itself out at an intuitive, nonrational, subconscious level that on the conscious level can be downright depressing. I think it is part of the creative process and one has to learn to weather it. For me recently, that meant dragging myself to the easel everyday anyway. Dragging, dragging, dragging. Finally today, after about two months of this, three paintings jumped alive. Three! A new level of understanding, a new level of competency. Well worth the very painful wait.
