Hello there! The method of layering (Fat over thin) is the way of the old masters and works as well now as then. Basically you start with an underpainting of some color (I like cobalt blue)thinned with an amt of turpentine. This is allowed to cure for some time...days really and additional layers of paint are built up in layers over this with each successive layer a bit more oily than the last. Linseed oil is the oil of choice (walnut, poppyseed for lighter colors if you wish). Certain colors are somewhat more opaque and others less so and you'll understand them as you go. Start several canvasses at a time, it'll keep your activity level up and you'll learn more that way...more mistakes = more fun!
