Bad news, Elaine: like so much in oil painting patience is a virtue when it come to varnishing! There are very sound reasons for the wait (six months or more as you say) most of them having to do with clouding and similar problems if one varnishes too early.

On a brighter note, you may not be aware that a great many contemporary painters, portraitists included, give the painting to the client when it is completed with the understanding that it will need to be taken back in due course for final varnishing. If one is producing a quality product this isn’t really an option, and your clients will thank you for it in the long run.
