The cracking is due to the use of the cobalt drier only, and putting on layers to soon ( best you wait six monyhs to one year between eatch layer)
Although all oilpaintings will crack in the end, they normaly take some more time. This happens cause oil is infact never dry. So it dries on and on for ages. The cracks become more and more visable.
So for your friend it is a bit painful. Tell him to stop using the driers, insteed if he likes to have quick drying oilpaint he could use some dammar and wax. The only remedie for his paintings is to restore them by sizeing the cracks with a mixter of dammar and wax.
