Not stupid questions at all...there is a book you need badly "The Materials & Techniques of Painting" by Kurt Wehlte. Try http://www.half.com or http://www.amazon.com for a more recent edition, mine is a 1982 version and while I LOVE this book for questions just as yours some materials have changed and become more common today. Turps are used in the beginning remembering that there are basically two common techniques for oil painting...ala prima (all at once) which means what it says. Prep a canvas with Gesso, charcoal a sketch on the canvas and paint your painting...when you are done with the sitting you are finished with the painting. Layering involves building up your painting from turps-paint to paint with media (oil) to avoid cracking. Remember that oil paint right out of the tube is as useablea paint as anything you can mix. Barron's books also has a series on oil painting that would be very hepful to you...search those sites. Beginning is the trick to oil painting, you've got to start!
