Oh God!

Many stupid questions. Did the great masters like Dali use Varnish, and what kind of varnish? Also did they use straight oil paint, if not what was it mixed with? And what is the diffrence between petroleum, turpentine and this colourless painting medium? See I just started oil painting and I have began at an impressive state, but it is the many materials that I am confused about. This forum is my only form of communication with any other oil painters..so help me!!!
