I would suggest staying away from driers. Too many coats of gesso can cause problems.
Perhaps he might consider priming his canvas with an oil primer?
Robert Doak makes primers and he's very knowledgeable regarding art materials. I bet he could answer your questions and supply your friend with the proper primer and instructions.
