If you paint over Lamp black or Ivory black, your painting may crack. Also, putting Zinc white in your paintings can lead to cracking, especially when it is used thickly.
Certain pigments require a lot more oil than others. It's best to paint "fat over lean," which means each time you add a layer, that layer should have more oil in it than the one beneath it. So, oily pigments like the carbon blacks will lead to cracking generally because they are mixed with 100% oil.
