: I am having trouble keeping the values and hues of my upper layer glazes, especially if I am 'mixing' on the painting, i.e., superimposing transparent colours over other, usually darker, colours. I use oil paint, with nothing but cold linseed oil and poppy oil, usually with traditional transparent colours like cobalt and madder, aureolin etc.
: I've heard amber ($$$) works, but is there anything else I can do? Thanks
Shawn:
Try using copal-based mediums (Robert Doak & Associates, 89 Bridge Street, Brooklyn, NY). They are not as expensive as amber mediums (although amber goes a long long way, and really isn't that expensive for what it does for your painting!), are absolutely permanent, won't yellow, and are wonderful mediums with which to work. You might also be interested in using walnut oil-based paint (like Leonardo), also available from Doak. Best of skill, Martín, Madrid, España.
