yellow cloth How to paint?

I am painting an oil painting, a Madonna with a yellow cloth on her hand, using Cadmium Yellow and Raw Umber for the darks. But it does not cover the canvas and looks seethrough compared to the other garment of the Madonna. I know the rule "fat on thin", but the colors just smear when I mix Titan white for the highlights. What am I doing wrong?
