keeping upper layers pure

I am having trouble keeping the values and hues of my upper layer glazes, especially if I am 'mixing' on the painting, i.e., superimposing transparent colours over other, usually darker, colours. I use oil paint, with nothing but cold linseed oil and poppy oil, usually with traditional transparent colours like cobalt and madder, aureolin etc.

I've heard amber ($$$) works, but is there anything else I can do? Thanks

shawn
