I am not an expert, and I am just beginning to use these methods myself, but I have read from other sources on the same type of techniques and here is what I have understood about the first layer:
Mixing the turp and damar is simply creating a medium in which you mix your colours. You cannot use turp alone (tried it..oops!) but need the damar to "hold" the colours in place when applying the next layers. I beleive you could substitute damar varnish (premixed) diluted with turp to form your base for this layer. Just remember that you are making a transparent layer here and so do not add to much oil paint! Think inks...at least for consistancy. Good luck, hope this helps.

: I need just a little help to get me going. I've done several paintings using oil paints and like my results, but would like to use the method described by 1art.com/tips. I would like to take my paintings to a higher level.
: I made by drawing and transferred it to the prepared canvas. Step 11 "Imprimatura" is where am. Most of my picture is very light, almost white. The back ground is a huge water falls.
: The tutorial says to cover the canvas with a liquid mixture of: Red Ochre, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black made to be an olive hue.
: Questions:
: Do I mix up a solution of 2% of dry DAMAR CRYSTALS and 98% of turpentine and then add Red Ochre, Yellow Ochre and Ivory Black to make my "olive hue"?
: What does the DAMAR CRYSTALS do? Can I leave it out? Can I use Liquin or linseed oil instead?
