: Dear 1art.com; I recently began painting with oils and I'm finding I get dry-flat patches...I assume it's from the layers of paint underneath that have dried to a certain extent and the new layer of paint I put on is making it go dry and flat. I recall having the same problems with oils years ago when I used it and I would love to know how I can overcome this problem (is it a matter of having to get the painting done in a certain length of time before the paint dries?)and if there's a way I can fix these areas because I've put so much work into it.
: Any feedback is greatly appreciated...
I've encountered the same problem, and it often is due to the ground being too absorbant. I seldom have the paint layer go dull if I'm working on a canvas board (one of the cheapie cardboard ones), but will have the problem with a stretched canvas primed with acrylic gesso. I've heard that rubbing a thin layer of oil into the area will take care of it, but the best solution is probably to start with a ground that's not too absorbent. Sorry I can't give you any specifics...this is the extent of my wisdom. Sorry! Good Luck.
