: can anyone tell me the easiest and quickest way to repair a torn oil painting canvas...about 2-3" long...it does not have to be professional..only enough so i can finish my work...the front oils are in deep dark greens and blacks, etc...does not seem to show from the front much....thank you
Prepare a piece of waxed paper to put under the surface of the painting where the tear is (hopefully, the colors are dry; if not, let them dry before attempting to patch). Lay the painting picture side down. Cut a piece of thin canvas a little bit bigger than the tear. Melt a small portion of beeswax mixed with a tiny portion of dammar and thinned with turpentine (not on an open fire: it could burn or catch fire very quickly). Paint the wax mixture over the tear on the reverse side of the painting, add the patch, and carefully press with a lukewarm iron to be sure the wax is completely melted and attached to the patch. If the painted surface is made with very thick colors, be care not to put on too much pressure when ironing. Leave the canvas to dry overnight; something heavy can be put over the patch during this time. Next day, carefully remove the waxed paper from the surface with a bit of turpentine. The place where the patch is will probably have to be touched up a bit from the front. I have used this method and it works very well.
