When you use black from the tube the reason why it looks so devoid of color is because the definition of the color black is that it is the absence of color while white is the full representation of color. Thats why it is so hard to paint using black itself and also why many don't use it. The reason why your teach told u to use those colors is cause they create a color similar to black. Another way to go around this is to mix colors that sit opposite of each other on the color wheel.( Red &Green, Blue &Orange, Purple &yellow) Each of these gives a more vibrant shade of black, though it takes time getting use to them. good luck!
