As far as I understand it. French Varnish was just a specially prepared shellac. You can pick up a “high-grade” comparable version in most art or hobby stores. I would assume that, if he did use it, it was to protect his under painting. Shellac, unlike a traditional varnish, is not cut with turpentine - so it is impervious to over-painting mediums (containing turp.)
