: Blacks are rarely found in nature. Consequently, I would think, you would nearly never paint with black as it comes from the tube. If you thought about black as a way to adjust another dark color (red / blue) - it might help you get a handle on darks. If you want to see a good example of black at it’s best - check out Velazquez. As far as I can see, he was perfectly content to paint a figure with white, black, and an earth red (like burnt sienna.) As far as mixing burnt umber and ultramarine together instead of just using black goes, I haven’t seen a lot of difference save consistency. The U./U. mixture seems a little more opaque than say an ivory black, which seems to get really dirty when thinned out. --Have you ever tried Blue-Black (Vine Black?) It might be something to consider if you’ve tried everything else and still don’t get the results you want.
