I paint on board exclusively, something that I recommend you to do. Stretched canvas is not nearly as versatile as board, and it costs you too much. Consider luan or masonite as a support. Drying time? About 4 to 5 months is fairly accurate if you paint with moderately thick paint. Then it's safe to varnish. If you paint like a wimp in watercolor mode then drying will be quicker of course.
