: nancy: it depends why it needs to be cleaned. surface dirt or old varnish. different methods different solvents. if the piece is good or you think its valuable take it to a restoration expert. home made cleaning agents cause more harm than good. i am a conserator and i restore oil paintings. unless you know what you are doing you will!!!!!!!! ruin your flea market find.

i send all my paintings to therestorer -.
most costs anywhere from 150 to 300 up to 700 for a very lag old master restoration from the 1700's
i find if i can save at teh junk shops, flea markets etc then i may have to make it up at the restorer but the paintings are always worth 10x's the price if sold - if not more
