Use the white sparingly, and make the skin tone medium, not too light. Then you can blend in a little pure red, and pure white for highlights over the flesh tone to make it come alive. If you are using the underpainting method of doing the entire portrait in black and white, then adding the color in a glaze, you can add some of the above recipie to your favorite medium and glaze in the color. You can add a little blue to the shadow areas, but it can be overpowering if not applied lightly.
