The old masters would have used those if they had them. If you must use wood, mahogany is as good as any. The thin panels must be laid with their grain going in opposite directions before gluing. A free-floating system of dovetailed cradles will help prevent buckling. Panels are usually covered with fabric to ptrevent shrinking grain and cracks from coming theorugh the surface.
