value of a painting and signature

Please tell me if there is a web sight or a way via the internet that I can identify a signature and the painter of an antique painting I just bought. There are no details on the back of the painting. I bought it at an antique store.
I think it may be valuable; I will approach our local museum. In the mean time, do let me know if the internet provides such details.
I think that would be a precious service to others.
