Re: is art today really art?
You have to be careful when becomming an art critic these days, but you are right to an extent . You must first ask yourself is it good art or bad art? I usually gauge art on several levels . Is there an impact the art is trying to achieve or is it just another case of art in art out processing of drivel and if it is drivel is it worth the time to criticize?Conceptual art was intended for the artists themselves originally . The concept somehow overriding the technique or the method behind the madness.I have been caught up in a few conceptual tirades myself but I realize it as such but some artists place all the emphisis upon it and do go overboard. But like in space there are no limits to imagination and i guess what comes along with the territory is alot of rubbish too. The question for you is can a creator be an artist and also a mass product too?? I know of several artists who make reproductions as a rip off just to make money and then do their own personal works as their real statements. It is a jungle out there and survival of the fittest in any means neccessary. The sad thing is the public eats this drivel up. There are shortcuts taken in every field and art is no differant. It is a business with all the bad aspects of business in general. : I so agree with you. I sometimes feel that conceptual art has gone too far. People are sheep and tend to just go with the flow. I am of the opinion that only a tiny percentage of the people that claim to be conceptual art enthusiasts really do enjoy it. The rest of them just want be seen doing what, in the eyes of the art community, is ‘in’ and ‘trendy’ and fashionable. Everyone is buying into the hype, hopping on the bandwagon, and the so-called artists are jumping out of their unmade beds and laughing all the way to the bank.: If people like Tracy Emin can do it, so can I. I’m sure though if I took a picture of my bedroom, which also happens to be a tip, and sent it to Mr Saatchi, he’d have a good laugh at my expense.
