MORE BASIC TIPS re: SELF-PORTRAITURE:
Photos/half tones are good reference material for beginners.
1. Oou can enlarge reduce as needed.
2. You can omit the measuring process of a life-study by using a trace for the initial layout. Typo paper has the best translucency/softness for this process.
3. Flesh tones / colouring / and light/shade are rendered for interpretation.
4. The subject remains in a stationary pose, therefore enabling closer study.
Use a sharp instrument to indicate hairs/lines, before applying shadow tones. The paper will be indented leaving a white lineamidst the darker shades. This can also be used to indicate skin lines and creases.
Use a mid tone pencil like a 2B for the majority of the toning work, and cross-hatch rather than scumble, remove portions of the pencil-work with an eraser then re-cross hatch as often as required, this will make for the appearance of highlights and lighter blemishes to the skin
