try taking a soft pencil, a 4B should do, and very lighly put a layer of gray down, without applying any pressure, just the weight of the pencil. then take something like a kleenex tissue (make sure it doesnt have lotion, itll ruin your day), and blend it out... then repeat to get the desired darkness...
when ya get comfortable with that, something else good to use is blending stumps and tortillons (rolled up paper sharpened like a pencil) for the finer details. any questions, feel free to email me!
