basically, H means "hard" and B means "soft"... going from softest to hardest, it goes like this:
6B, 4B, 2B, HB, H, 2H, 4H, 6H
(there might also be "B" between 2B and HB, im not sure...)
so your HB pencil is not too hard, not too soft... with softer ones making dark, bold strokes, and harder ones making light, thin ones... i also believe that a standard #2 pencil is equivilent to a 2H. hope this helps!
