FWIW, I tend to think in terms of material abstraction and non-material abstraction. It just helps me to get a handle on what I'm pondering, whether I'm creating the stuff or viewing someone else's work.
Material abstraction usually contains recognizable elements that have been rendered in an unfamiliar or uncommon way. Cubism is an example. I do nudes that are abstract yet recognizable. I've seen some wonderful abstract landscapes (at least, that's what I think they are...)
Sounds like you (Steve) prefer non-material abstraction in your work. The paint represents a thought, a concept, feeling, or something that's otherwise inexpressible through conventional means. Sounds perfectly legitimate to me.
